Welcome to the web page for Patti Russell Fine Art. I have created this site as a place for viewers to see, and possibly own, my unique paintings. One of my goals is to create art that speaks to you, the viewer. You may imagine a story, a place, and/or an emotion – either way I hope you feel something as you look at my work because I assure you I “felt” the art as I was making it.

My artistic style is “expressionistic”. I do not strive to make a sunflower look just like the real flower but rather my “feeling of the flower and its attitude” at that particular time. If I am painting a landscape I don’t copy my photo reference, but rather I use several photos - taking the sky from one, the land from another, a tree from another, and then putting all the photos aside – finishing the painting in whatever way it seems to work best for me. Thus my landscape paintings are not of a specific place – but a place in my mind that is totally unique.

How I Paint

Approaching a blank white canvas and puddles of varying colors of paint on a palette can be daunting. Sometimes I have a plan, an idea, a purpose, and I may even jot down steps that I need to take – much like a recipe – in order to achieve my expected outcome.

Other days I boldly load my brush with a color and paint with wild abandon. As I proceed adding more and more color and paint to a piece I become "tuned in" to it and it tells me what next color or shape it needs. All I do is respond to the messages thaat I receive.

One of the joys of being a painter is that I get to make the rules for how I paint! What a great job I have!
